Laser Hair Removal Popularity Soars Driven by Faster, Less Painful Systems
When laser hair removal first appeared in doctor offices almost a decade ago, consumers complained about thepain -- like a stiff rubber band snap -- and the lengthy time needed to treat
large areas -- about an hour for lower legs. Today, thanks to advances in technology that eliminate these problems, laser hair removal is among the most popular non-surgical procedures for women nationwide and a growing trend among men.
According to Dr. Michelle Ehrlich, dermatologic surgeon at Palos Verdes Dermatology Associates, the driving force behind the new interest in laser hair removal is the arrival of new systems like the Arion alexandrite that are half as painful and twice as fast as other laser systems.
"Patients now have a more comfortable experience with laser hair removal," said Dr. Ehrlich. "As a result, they're willing to try treatments on larger areas like legs, back, abdomen and chest."
Dr. Ehrlich noted that another benefit with the Arion is the use of scanners that create perfect shapes for the laser beam. Physicians can set the scanner to focus the laser in perfectly straight lines, creating a perfect bikini line. Oval shapes are ideal for underarms, and rectangles help cover large areas and avoid skipping or double-pulsing spots.
Because hair grows in three distinct stages, more than one treatment is needed for best results. An average of 4-8 treatments is usually required at 4-6 week intervals. After that, according to Dr. Ehrlich, patients are virtually hair-free and may come in for a touch-up annually.
Dr. Ehrlich recommends alexandrite lasers as best for people with light skin and dark hair. This type of laser targets the melanin found in the hair follicle, thereby reducing hair growth. Patients with darker skin should ask their doctor about the newest Nd:YAG lasers, such as the Mydon, that use
innovative cooling mechanisms to minimize discomfort and pigmentation changes.
"Once our patients realize that laser hair removal is less painful than waxing and more convenient than shaving, they are very enthusiastic," said Dr. Ehrlich.
